Checking system properties on Linux

This tutorial shows use the basic command to check system properties and configuration on Linux.

Checking what Linux distribution you are running


To check what distribution of Linux you are running, use the following command:
cat /etc/*-release

A sample output look something like this:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)

Check kernel version


To check the kernel version of your Linux installation, run:
uname -a

Sample output:
Linux re45.domain.com 2.6.18-193.15.4.el5 #1 SMP Wed Oct 20 13:03:08 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
